As someone who is passionate about art-focused tourism, I take my museum hopping seriously! Below you will find a list of what I think are the 10 best art museums around the world (so far). This list is Western Hemisphere heavy and that is my fault! It is not an insinuation that Western Art is better. I have not been to nearly as many museums outside of the US and Europe. That being said, this list is not Bible and it will evolve as I get luckier and am able to travel to more places.

1. ARKEN Museum of Modern Art

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is where Danish charm meets contemporary creativity! Situated in the scenic landscape of Ishøj, just south of Copenhagen, ARKEN offers a captivating journey through modern and contemporary art. Marvel at renowned works by international artists like Damien Hirst and Ai Weiwei, alongside stunning exhibitions showcasing Danish talents. With its distinctive architecture inspired by Nordic landscapes, ARKEN is a cultural gem that promises to inspire and delight. When I lived in Copenhagen, I trekked on public transportation way too long to arrive at ARKEN, but it truly blew me away. I was in awe in every gallery. This is definitely a contemporary art museum using a lot of innovative techniques and materials, and may not be suitable or the preference for everyone in your travel group… and that’s okay! I have always loved controversial art installations, so this is my #1. Also, the grounds are beautiful, even on a chilly Danish winter afternoon.

2. Musée de l’Orangerie

From people I talk to, I hear this museum is either not on your radar at all or its your favorite of all time. I am in the second camp. Prepare to be enchanted by the sublime beauty of the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Tucked away in the picturesque Tuileries Garden, this intimate museum offers a serene sanctuary for lovers of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.
