In the vast landscape of different travel experiences, each journey is a unique reflection of personal preferences and desires. From leisurely escapes to adrenaline-fueled adventures, travelers embrace a multitude of styles to satisfy their wanderlust. Let’s dive into the spectrum of travel styles and explore how different people like to spend their time while traversing the globe. Two of the main travel styles are Adventuring and Vacationing, and I will break them down for you.
Adventuring
This means that you are out for an adventure in the purest form. Whatever 16-hour flight, train, and car combination got you there is not the end of it. High-energy adventurers thrive on adrenaline-pumping experiences and thrilling escapades. From hiking rugged mountain trails to diving into crystal-clear waters, these travelers seek out heart-pounding activities that push their limits. Think bungee jumping in New Zealand, trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru, or whitewater rafting in Costa Rica. Every moment is a chance to embrace the unknown and conquer new challenges, creating memories that will last a lifetime. This oftentimes includes planning a detailed itinerary ahead of time, making sure all of the activities fit into your daily schedule perfectly, research, reservations and permits, and crossing off bucket list items.
One example of how I have seen this in my own life is how I planned an itinerary for months for me and two friends to fit in 3 major European cities in 8 days during a break of graduate school. I sent out an itinerary, made tour reservations, pre-purchased museum tickets, and had a list of picture perfect spots to send to our friends and family. I have also gone on a ten day trek across the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where we conquered multiple mountains and landscapes like the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Pools, and Sligachan.

Vacationing
This requires getting somewhere…. and that’s it. Vacationing is all about rest. For those seeking solace and rejuvenation, relaxation retreats offer the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Picture yourself lounging on pristine beaches, indulging in spa treatments, and savoring delicious cuisine. Destinations like the Maldives, Bali, and the Caribbean are renowned for their luxurious resorts and tranquil atmospheres. Whether you’re unwinding with a yoga session at sunrise or lounging by the pool with a tropical cocktail in hand, relaxation retreats provide a sanctuary for the soul. The purpose of vacationing is to detach, reset, and rest.
Recently, I vacationed to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic at an adults only all inclusive resort on the beach. All of our meals were included, every restaurant had room for us, and the advertised show event and schedule took care of our entertainment desires. The bartenders knew us by name and we practically had our names etched into our preferred poolside seating by the end of our week there.

The Issue of Mismatched Travel Styles
Now, can these two travel styles coexist? Can they coexist in a relationship if you and your partner have different travel styles? Can they coexist in one trip that you both are putting down your PTO and money for?
I have frequently seen social media posts or memes of disgruntled boyfriends when they get woken up by hyper partners to go on a sunrise hike followed by an itinerary of other physical activity or shopping. How do we mitigate the risk of being disappointed in our partner’s travel style?
Imagine you and your travel buddy have finally embarked on that long-awaited trip together, only to realize you have totally different travel styles. It happens to the best of us. But fear not, because with a little creativity and compromise, you can keep the adventure alive and ensure both of you have an epic time. Here’s how to navigate those differences like a pro:
Communication is Key:
First things first, open up those lines of communication and have an honest chat about your travel styles and preferences. Maybe you’re all about chilling on the beach with a good book, while your buddy is itching to explore every nook and cranny of the city. That’s cool! By expressing your desires and expectations upfront, you can find common ground and plan activities that cater to both of your interests.
Find the Middle Ground:
So, you’re a laid-back beach bum, and your buddy’s a thrill-seeking adventurer – sounds like the perfect opportunity to mix things up! Seek out activities that offer a little something for everyone, whether it’s a day of snorkeling followed by a sunset beach bonfire or a morning hike followed by a leisurely afternoon of spa treatments. Finding that sweet spot where both of you can indulge in your preferred activities will ensure a harmonious and enjoyable trip for all.
Some destinations that have something for everyone include Guatemala, Costa Rica, Italy, Thailand, and Spain.
Split Up (Temporarily):
Hey, sometimes you gotta do your own thing, and that’s totally okay! If you and your travel buddy have wildly different interests, don’t be afraid to split up for a few hours and pursue your own adventures. Maybe you want to check out that art museum while your buddy hits up the local market – go for it! Just be sure to set a meeting point and time to reconvene so you can swap stories and share your experiences.
Try Something New Together:
One of the best parts of traveling with a buddy is the opportunity to try new things together! So why not step out of your comfort zones and explore activities that neither of you has tried before? Whether it’s taking a cooking class, embarking on a guided bike tour, or learning to surf, embracing new experiences as a team can strengthen your bond and create lasting memories.
Embrace the Adventure:
At the end of the day, travel is all about embracing the adventure and making the most of every moment – even when things don’t go exactly as planned. So whether you’re lounging on a beach, scaling a mountain, or wandering the streets of a new city, remember to embrace the journey and savor the experience. After all, it’s not about the destination – it’s about the epic adventures you have along the way. So grab your travel buddy, hit the road, and let the good times roll!
