The Heart of Portland’s Brewery Scene
While I was in Portland, it was my goal to embark on my own self-guided brewery tour to taste the best craft beers in the nation, and that’s exactly what I did. The Pearl District is the brewery hub of Portland on the west side of the city. This neighborhood includes nationally known breweries like 10 Barrel Brewing and Rogue Brewing, but also houses newcomers like Breakside and Deschutes Brewery. But beer isn’t the only thing this neighborhood has to offer. The Pearl District hosts the monthly art crawl through its renowned art galleries the first week of the month. Enjoy art, free booze, and the Portland nightlife. Additionally, 23rd Avenue is home to the newest up-and-coming shopping street in Portland. Travel over 10 blocks down 23rd Avenue and you’ll pass staples such as Aesop’s and Blue Star Donut, housed in quaint old Portland classic homes, along with specialty shops and restaurants dispersed throughout. The best part? Everything is on the same street, so there’s no need to wander.
History and Background
The Pearl District was once a bustling industrial area, home to warehouses and railroad yards. Over the past few decades, it has transformed into one of Portland’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its loft-style apartments, trendy shops, art galleries, and, of course, its breweries. The district’s name is said to come from a local gallery owner who likened the area to a crusty old oyster with a pearl inside, symbolizing the hidden gems found within the industrial exterior.
